sorry for the late reply,

Kinch was around for five seasons so I was used to him. Getting rid of him wasn't an improvement and it just seemed odd having another guy.

I thought I was going to miss Kinch but I actually quite liked Baker.

I actually wrote a lengthy post about my thoughts on Baker a while back - you might find what I have to say interesting:

I agree with you Big Daddy O'Reilly. I don't think Ivan Dixon really fit in a comedy show.

I do give Ivan the benefit of the doubt: they really didn't give Kinch much to do beyond being Hogan's radio contact (and, as I understad, that's one of the reasons he left); even though HOGAN'S HEROES is a product of a time where character development was usually discouraged from most shows (especially taking syndication and reruns into consideration), still, Kinch had the least amount of growth or development of the entire cast. I know the rest of the cast was really fond of him though - Richard Dawson said in an interview Ivan was the best actor in their cast, but the most insecure about his acting, and often asked for approval from his costars, even though he apparently didn't even need it, so sometimes he and Larry Hovis would play little pranks on him by pretending his acting wasn't up to snuff (when it really was), but Ivan took their bluffing seriously.

That being said, the very few times Kinch was allowed to shine were rather good episodes: "The Prince from the Phone Company," "Is General Hammerschlaag Burning?" and "The Softer They Fall" gave him more to do in those three episode than he did for much of the rest of the series. It's too bad HOGAN got caught up in the Rural Purge, because really, Baker didn't get a chance to shine in an episode of his own, and I'm sure he could have if given the chance.

I will say this though: Baker couldn't seem to master fake German accents quite like Kinch could. Then again, Hogan's German accent was always so over-the-top, that could be why he eventually stopped trying to fake one altogether those last couple of seasons.
