|Great Britain produced massive quantities of the Sten Gun. The most distinctive feature is the stick magazine. Unlike the Thompson Submachine gun, which has the magazine inserted from the bottom, the Sten Gun has the magazine inserted from the side.
I've seen it used on HH by our Heros and other partisan fighters.
You can read about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sten_gun
The UK produced these as they were quick to make and cheap. The side magazine was used as it helped the bullets feed better into the magazine.
They are so simple they could probably be made by any civilian with a modest amount of shop tools.
They had to be easy and cheap to make as Great Britain was well behind the curve and literally out gunned. They had to get their fire power up to speed in a hurry.
Due to the haste of manufacture, these were prone to jamming. The biggest cause of the jamming was when a fighter used the magazine as a handle. It was in a great place to hold, but it pulled the magazine out of alignment just enough that eventually, the bullets wouldn't feed right.
